Five things we never pack on a Kenyan walking safari

Paleo Trails Africa teamApril 12, 20261 min read

After a decade of guiding groups across Kenya, we've developed strong opinions about what belongs in your pack and what doesn't. Here are five things we never bring on a walking safari, and what we bring instead.

1. Heavy cotton jeans. They soak up sweat, take forever to dry, and chafe after two hours on the trail. We recommend lightweight, quick-dry trekking trousers or convertible pants instead.

2. A full-size DSLR with a zoom lens. It's heavy, it's bulky, and it changes how you experience the walk. A compact mirrorless camera or even a modern smartphone is enough. Your guide will help you get close to the wildlife safely.

3. Multiple pairs of shoes. One well-broken-in pair of lightweight hiking boots or trail runners is all you need. Bring camp sandals or flip-flops for the evenings.

4. A detailed printed itinerary. Things change on the trail. A river crossing might be higher than expected, or a group might want to spend an extra hour at a viewpoint. Flexibility is part of the experience.

5. Expectations of constant connectivity. There is no signal on most of our routes, and that is the point. We carry a satellite messenger for emergencies, but otherwise, this is your chance to be off the grid.

Stories are good. Walking them is better.
