Mount Kenya's foothills are walkable year-round, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Here is a month-by-month breakdown to help you choose the right time.
December – March: This is the classic dry season on the mountain. Days are warm and clear, nights are cool. The trails are firm, views of the peak are reliable, and the bamboo forests are at their most pleasant. This is our busiest period and the most popular time for the foothills trek.
April – May: The long rains. We still run trips, but expect afternoon showers, muddy sections, and the possibility of low cloud on the upper slopes. The forest is lush and green, birding is exceptional, and there are fewer groups on the trail.
June – October: The second dry season. Good conditions similar to December–March, with slightly cooler temperatures. The mountain is often visible in the early mornings before cloud builds. This is an excellent time for photography.
November: The short rains. Similar to April–May but with shorter, more intense showers. The forest is vibrant, and the waterfalls are at their fullest. A good time for those who don't mind a bit of mud.
Whichever season you choose, we provide full rain gear and adjust the pace to conditions. The foothills are beautiful in every weather. Just bring the right attitude and a waterproof jacket.
